DIY After Sun & Sun Protection Guide: Recipes for Radiant Summer Skin

Sunlight is both a blessing and a challenge. While it boosts our endorphins, it is also responsible for approximately 80% of visible skin ageing. The process of photoageing – light-induced skin damage – is deceptive because it often only becomes visible years later in the form of dark spots, deep wrinkles, and a loss of elasticity. An intelligent sun protection concept therefore combines preventative protection with a highly effective, regenerative after-sun strategy. In this guide, we show you how to transform your bathroom into a laboratory for luxurious DIY sun care.

The Science of Light: Why Protection is Non-Negotiable

Before we get to the recipes, we must understand what we are protecting against. Sunlight consists, among other things, of UVA and UVB rays.

  • UVB rays penetrate the epidermis and are the primary cause of sunburn.

  • UVA rays are longer-wave and penetrate deep into the dermis. There, they destroy the collagen structure. Since UVA rays even penetrate window glass and clouds, daily protection is the most important anti-ageing measure.

The DIY Glow Equation for Summer

Level 1: The Kitchen Alternative – Natural First Aid

True beauty care often begins in the pantry. If your skin reacts with “heat sensitivity” after a day outdoors, these recipes will help lower the temperature.

Recipe 1: Iced Green Tea Compress

Green tea is one of the richest sources of polyphenols, which can neutralise free radicals before they cause cell damage.

  • Instructions: Brew a strong organic green tea. Let it cool completely and place it in the fridge for an hour. Soak cotton cloths in it and place them on the face and décolleté for 15 minutes.

  • Effect: The tannins have an astringent effect, and the antioxidants stop the oxidation chain triggered by UV light.

Recipe 2: The Enzymatic Cucumber Cooler

Cucumbers contain enzymes that soothe swelling and minerals that stabilise the moisture balance.

  • Instructions: Puree half a cold cucumber and mix it with a tablespoon of organic yoghurt. Apply the paste generously.

Level 2: Luxe DIY – Regeneration with Replenishing Skin Oil

In this level, we leverage the technological superiority of professional active ingredients in our own blends. The focus here is on Replenishing Skin Oil.

Recipe 3: The After-Sun Glow Serum (Royal Mix)

This is our absolute favourite recipe for the evening after sunbathing. It seals in moisture and provides the vitamins that UV light strips from the skin.

  • The Base: 2 tablespoons of Aloe Vera Gelly (Art. 061).

  • The Booster: 3 to 4 drops of Replenishing Skin Oil (Art. 187).

  • Application: Mix both components until an opalescent emulsion forms. Apply to slightly damp skin after showering.

  • Why it works: The Gelly provides deep hydration. The Replenishing Skin Oil (rich in Vitamins E, A, and C, and bisabolol) acts as a shield, rebuilding the lipid barrier and ensuring a long-lasting tan.

Recipe 4: The Cooling Aloe First Body Splash

A moisturizing spray for use throughout the day that relieves “heat buildup” in the body.

Ingredients: 100 ml Aloe First (Item 040) *, 5 drops of lavender oil (optional), and 1 teaspoon of Replenishing Skin Oil * .

Instructions: Pour into a spray bottle and shake vigorously (since the oil and water separate).

Effect: Aloe First soothes the skin thanks to its combination of aloe vera, propolis, and 11 herbal extracts. The oil ensures that the moisture does not evaporate immediately.

Level 3: Professional Upgrade – The Ultimate Sun System Ritual

For maximum protection and results that go beyond the ordinary, we utilise the coordinated system care from Forever Living.

The Protection: Aloe Sunscreen (Art. 617) *

The Aloe Sunscreen offers SPF 30 protection against both UVA and UVB rays. What makes it special is the mineral base of Zinc Oxide combined with innovative chemical filters.

  • DIY Application Tip: Don’t apply sunscreen in circular motions; instead, “stipple” (dab) it lightly onto the skin. This ensures the protective film remains seamless. Zinc Oxide also has anti-inflammatory properties—ideal for those prone to “Mallorca Acne” or heat rashes.

The Deep Care: Aloe First & Gelly Layering

After a day at the beach, your skin is “thirsty.” We recommend the Triple-Layering technique:

  1. Hydrate: Spray your entire body with Aloe First * to lower the pH value and calm the surface.

  2. Repair: Apply Aloe Vera Gelly *  pure as a cooling moisture mask on particularly red areas.

  3. Seal: Finish by mixing your favourite body lotion with 5 drops of Replenishing Skin Oil *  to lock everything in.

Insider Tips for DIY Summer Skincare

  • SPF in Makeup: Never trust the SPF in your foundation alone. It is usually applied far too thinly to provide the stated protection. Always use Aloe Sunscreen as a base under your makeup.

  • The Two-Finger Rule: To protect your face and neck, you need two full lines of sunscreen on your index and middle fingers. This is the only way to reach the full SPF 30.

  • Peeling No-Go: Avoid mechanical scrubs (with grains) immediately after sunbathing. Your skin is already working at its limit. Wait at least 48 hours before gently removing dead skin cells to maintain your tan.

FAQ – Expert Knowledge for Sun-Kissed Skin

1. What is the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen?

Mineral (physical) filters like zinc oxide act like tiny mirrors on the skin’s surface and reflect UV rays immediately. They are highly tolerable and ideal for children and allergy sufferers. Chemical filters absorb into the skin and convert UV light into heat. Aloe Sunscreen uses an intelligent hybrid technology: it offers the immediate protective effect of mineral filters without the typical “white cast” and combines this with the cosmetic elegance of chemical filters. This guarantees broad-spectrum protection that feels feather-light on the skin.

2. Why is Replenishing Skin Oil so effective after the sun?

During sun exposure, free radicals are formed in the skin that attack cell membranes. Replenishing Skin Oil is a highly concentrated antioxidant serum. Its high content of Vitamin E (Tocopherol) acts as a radical scavenger, interrupting these harmful chain reactions. Furthermore, it contains valuable lipids from borage seed oil, which instantly make the skin barrier – made brittle by UV light – supple again. It doesn’t “repair” the skin in a medical sense but massively supports the body’s own regenerative processes and prevents moisture loss.

3. How much sunscreen do I actually need for true protection?

Most people use only about a third of the amount needed for the stated sun protection factor. As a rule of thumb, use the two-finger rule: for the face and neck, you need two full lines of sunscreen on your index and middle fingers. For an adult’s entire body, reckon with about 30 ml (roughly a shot glass full) per application. Since sweat, water, and friction weaken the protective film, reapplying every two hours is absolutely essential to maintain protection.

4. Does Aloe Vera Gelly also help with an actual sunburn?

Yes, Aloe Vera has been known for millennia for its cooling and healing properties. Aloe Vera Gelly consists of nearly 100% pure inner leaf gel. It physically lowers the skin temperature and provides valuable polysaccharides that stimulate cell renewal. In the case of a sunburn (first-degree burn), it has an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. Tip for an extra kick: keep the Gelly in the fridge. The cold enhances the decongestant effect and stops the “burning” of the skin immediately after application.

5. Can I replace my after-sun care with oil?

Pure oil on dry, sun-irritated skin can be counterproductive as it doesn’t provide moisture, it only seals it. If the skin is already dehydrated, the oil locks in the dryness. The solution is the emulsion: always mix Replenishing Skin Oil with a water-based component like Aloe Vera Gelly or apply it to dripping wet skin. This creates a fine emulsion (lotion) that both binds water and delivers protective lipids into the skin. This is the key to plump Glass Skin in summer.
